Monybany Dau

Monybany Dau is a South Sudanese Canadian author, former child soldier, and community leader based in Alberta. Born in Atar, Sudan (now South Sudan) in 1975, he joined the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) as a child during the civil war and was later sent to Cuba for schooling. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he sought refuge and immigrated to Canada in 1998.

Since arriving in Alberta, Dau has worked for 27 years in a wide range of labour and non-labour roles, building his life through resilience and determination. He is currently serving as a Programs and Human Resources Manager at CAIWA (since 2022), where he supports community development and organizational growth.

He is also a devoted father and family man. Dau shares his life journey through his memoir When the River Reverses Course: The Untold Stories of Us and through public speaking, advocating for education, resilience, and the importance of telling one’s own story.
